Deadly Chase in Sonbhadra: Two Suspected Cattle Smugglers Shot After Attempt to Run Over Policeman
A police encounter in Uttar Pradesh’s Sonbhadra district left two suspected cattle smugglers injured after they allegedly tried to run over a constable during an interception. Sixteen cattle were recovered as authorities intensified enforcement of the state’s anti–cattle slaughter laws.
Both men sustained gunshot wounds during the exchange and were later seen on a wheelchair, folding their hands and apologising as officers escorted them for medical attention. Sixteen head of cattle were recovered from the vehicle at the scene. Police said the operation was part of the state’s intensified enforcement of Uttar Pradesh’s anti–cattle slaughter laws, under which smuggling and illegal transport are treated as serious offences.
Officials noted that the swift response was intended to deter organised cattle-trafficking networks operating in the region. The recovered cattle have been handed over to local authorities for safe custody, while further investigation is underway to determine the suspects’ wider links. The incident underscores the state’s ongoing crackdown on cattle-related offences and the increasing risks law enforcement faces in curbing such activities.
